Esther C. Kuhs
Nov. 26, 1939 - Sept. 23, 2021

Esther Caroline Kuhs, 93, of Gowanda, N.Y., entered into rest Sept. 23, 2021.

Esther was born in Springville, on Nov. 26, 1927, the youngest of four children and the only daughter to the late Wilhelm and Caroline (Burger) Kuhs.

Our Aunt Esther moved to Gowanda in 1939, enter-ing sixth grade at Gowanda Central School. During her high school years, she worked at the high school business office, and upon graduation in 1945, she worked in the business office at Peter Coper Corporation. Near the end of 1945, she was highly recommended by her business teachers for a position at the Bank of Gowanda, later renamed Marine Mid-land Bank. She became a very familiar face at the bank remaining there until her retirement, nearly 45 years later. She always laughed about the fact that the school subject she dis-liked the most was math, and yet her entire years of employment were spent working with numbers.

With extensive volunteer work for years, our Aunt Esther always found great satisfaction in helping others. All her volunteer activities and jobs are too numerous to mention but did include treasurer and volunteer for the Tri-County Hospital Auxiliary, Volunteer and board member at Collins Correctional Facility, treasurer at Gowanda Free Library and volunteer in a reading program, treasurer at Trinity United Church of Christ for years and supporter of the church until her death. She also belonged to the Gowanda Business and Professional Women’s Club, and in 1984 was named “Woman of the Year” for her many achievements.

So many times, you could find her in front of the grocery store or library selling poppies for Veteran’s Day or Chrysanthemums for a charitable cause. She loved going to Tim Horton’s or MacDonald’s with her friends and family, and she loved talking politics, analyzing the political figures and the world.

She is survived by 15 nieces and nephews, and also survived by several great, and great great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and by her three brothers: Robert Kuhs of Grants Pass, Ore., Elmer Kuhs of Gowanda, N.Y., and Harold Kuhs of Loris, S.C.

As requested by our Aunt Esther, a private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Interment will be at Jolls Road Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Mentley Funeral Home Inc., 105 E. Main St., in Gowanda.

If desired, memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Online condolences may be made at mentleyfuneralhome.com
