GOWANDA — With winter break leaving children with nothing to do for a week in Gowanda, village Recreation Director Mark Benton had plans for Gowanda’s first-ever Winterfest today. However, due to warming weathers and swampy grass, Benton called off the event via a Facebook post through “Gowanda – NY Events.”
Along with the cancellation, he gave an update on upcoming recreation events.
Here’s Benton’s post:
“With no snow on the ground and the forecast calling for 60 degrees and rain/drizzle for the next three days, I have no choice but to cancel Winterfest this year. We would only tear up the fields and who wants to play in a steady drizzle. I will speak with George Stark on how we will handle the funds that the American Legion provided for Winterfest.
“We finish up the winter programming with skiing on Sunday, Feb. 25 and roller skating on Monday, Feb. 26.
“(The) next event is the spring co-ed soccer program that will be held on Monday nights from 6 to 7:30 p.m. beginning May 7. The program will be free thanks to a grant that I received from the Kiwanis Club.
“I would also like to run another one-day football clinic in late July and possibly a girls fast pitch softball tournament at Gateway this summer. The Recreation Department would also like to host a men’s recreational softball night once a week beginning in mid May.”
